Three areas to focus on in order to remain reasonably physically fit.
Three Components of Physical Fitness
Stamina
The ability to sustain physical activity over a long period of time depends on cardio/pulmonary capacity. Cardio for heart. Pulmonary for lungs. Aerobic exercises such as walking, running or jogging are very effective in increasing the lung and heart capacity.
Flexibility
The ability to move the body limbs and torso within an acceptable rage. This depends on the elasticity of tendons and ligaments. Ligaments join bone to bone. Tendons attach muscles to bone. Inflexibility of these will limit range of movement and can lead to injury such as tearing.
As one ages the ligaments and tendons lose elasticity. Movements that were once easy become painful. Doing stretching exercises can slow down the process.
Strength
The ability to exert muscular force. This can be improved by doing resistance exercises, such as lifting weights. The more weight that is lifted, the stronger the muscles involved become.
A training plan or regime that combines all three of these elements is the ideal fitness plan. Many avid gym rats will bypass flexibility training and focus mainly on strength and endurance. If you observe these rats in their training habits, eventually you will find one limping, walking with one hand pressed to the side of their backs, or stretching a shoulder that has been injured due to the lack of stretching in the first place. All three are important; they complement each other. If your goal is to have optimal health and fitness, then start with these three elements (along with a healthy diet) and you will be well on your way.

People suffering from heart disease or arthritis should consult their doctors before engaging in any of these activities.
