Wing-suit Jumping The dream of soaring like a bird has always fascinated mankind. Yes, we finally achieved it and surpassed the birds in speed and altitude. But the ability to fly unassisted by any machine was the real dream. This desire has led to the design of what they call wing-suits, or suits which are designed to provide a person with a certain amount of lift that will enable him or her to glide to the ground below while travelling horizontally and descending vertically. In short, it constitutes a controlled fall that ends in the opening of a parachute once the glider has run out of sufficient altitude to continue the descent safely. Of course there is considerable risk involved in such a venture. Misjudgment of distance speed and proximity can prove hazardous and fatal and has proven fatal for a significant number. Showboating by plunging through narrow apertures of rock formations has been one cause. The gradual loss of fear lulled another into carelessness. A parachute that doesn't deploy can be another. What seems to escape their full realization is that they are not flying in the full birdlike sense of the word. They are falling, do not have control of their velocity, and do not have the maneuverability that birds have.
