Is an Embryo a Human Appendage?
There is this argument by women who are pro abortion which describes a embryo as merely another part of their body such as an appendage like an arm, a leg or a finger. Which of course, begs the question: Is an embryo merely a human appendage to be done with as the human being chooses?
Well, to respond to this question, which should obviously never be asked at all since the answer is so obvious, let's consider a human appendage with an embryo in order to see if they indeed can be considered equal.
Contrasts
First, a human appendage, such as an arm or a leg has a specific function designed to help the human organism, s accomplish things a. In the case of fingers it is to grasp things. In the case of legs it is to walk. In contrast, the human embryo has no such function.
Second: Humans are born with the appendages such as legs and fingers. In contrast, an embryo is a result of the human reproductive ability.
Third: Arms and hands do not eventually develop into human beings and detach themselves to become independent people. Embryos do.
Fourth: There are no biblical stipulations against the severing of an appendage. In contrast, there are clear indications that destroying an embryo is tantamount to destroying a human being.
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Psalm 139:13-16 ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
Exodus 21:22-25 ESV /
“When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman's husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Is the Unborn Part of the Mother's Body?
What’s most amazing about this pervasive pro-abortion argument is that it is demonstrably contradicted by the scientific facts. Mortimer Adler is as wrong as he can be, as every geneticist knows.
A body part, such as the arm or leg, is defined by the common genetic code it shares with the rest of its body. Every cell of the mother’s tonsils, appendix, heart, and lungs shares the same genetic code. The unborn child also has a genetic code, but it is distinctly different from his mother’s. Every cell of his body is uniquely his, each different than every cell of his mother’s body. Often his blood-type is also different, and half the time even his gender is different.

So absolutely not, an embryo is not merely a human appendage and its dependence on a human in order to stay alive does not render it as just an appendage.
