Believe in Hell? Then why are they so evil?
Why do persons claiming to believe in a literal hell, seem totally unconcerned by the terrifying possibility of winding up there to be tortured forever after they die and have been deemed unworthy of heaven?
You know, they very nonchalantly, and rather smugly, go about lying, stealing, fornicating, committing adultery, murdering, having abortions, slaughtering one another in battlefields, etc. without a worry in the world about where their final destination after death might be.
So the question, of course, is why? Why would a person who teaches others about the the horrible consequences unrepentant sin, behave in that blatantly devilish manner?
Well, after pondering this enigma, I reached three feasible conclusions that might explain this seemingly paradoxical phenomena:
Reasons
1. They don't really believe in God.
Yes, there are people who might be attending church for other reasons, such as association with others in order to assuage the feeling of loneliness, or for the in pursuit of a marriage mate, or else for the very profitable business connections that attendance provides. Of course, such people will feign to believe whatever is necessary in order to reach their goals and maintain their advantages.
2. They believe in God but not in hell.
Some might believe in God, and even be members of a church that preaches hellfire torment as punishment, in fact, they might even preach it themselves while totally disagreeing with the doctrine. In short, the warnings of being forever roasted alive by their supposedly merciful God, to them are merely silly figments of other people's religious imagination.
So death, to these individuals, is merely the identical profound the same unconsciousness which the were in prior to being born, and of which they have absolutely no unpleasant memory. So to them, such a state of total inexistence is an acceptable price to pay for what they consider the privilege of doing as they please.
3. They believe in both God and a literal torture-chamber of hell, but are unafraid of winding up there.
Now, if indeed this is the case, that I can't understand since the normal human response to a threat involve such a horrible eternal punishment, is to try desperately to avoid it at all costs. Yet, expressions such as "I'll see you in hell!" seem to convey that kind of an uncaring or accepting attitude.
