What Surprises Me About Current USA Politics
As a student of history, I had repeatedly read about how seemingly stable empires had suddenly gone out of existence and how all such empires should be expected to do so given enough time. Of course histry provides many examples of this phenomenon such as that of the The Hittite Empire, Babylonian Empire, the Assyrian Empire, the Medo-Persian Empire, The Macedonian Empire established by Alexander the Great, The Roman Empire, the Mongol Empire, the Islamic Empire, the Spanish Empire, the British Empire as well as the Soviet Union, just to name a few, were mentioned. Yes, all these seemed permanent, but had gradually weakened, and then had suddenly ceased to exist due to political turmoil and internal instabilities.
Yes, of course we were aware of this, but just like everyone else born prior to and immediately after WWII, we were still under the very strong impression that the United States must be a special exception. We found it hard to believe that this powerful stabilizing power in a world that seemed prone on going berserk, as it did during WWI and WWII, would not remain forever.
We could accept other countries ceasing to exist via becoming embroiled in military conflicts provoked by some politically ambitious maniacal leader such as Italy's Mussolini, Germany's Hitler, Spain's Franco and Russia's Stalin. Asiatic countries, such as Japan, China and Korea, were obviously also be become embroiled in problems primarily because of being misled by fanatical egotistical political leaders could cease to exist.

However, we could not fathom the powerful, and supremely politically stable United States undergoing such a drastic transformation. After all, the United States had been crucial in restoring stability to threatened world by serving as the arsenal against fascist tyranny and even helped it get back on its feet after military hostilities had ended.
So to us, it was considered the bulwark of democratic political stability whose political leaders would never be prone to express dictatorial, undemocratic characteristics which had repeatedly cropped up in these other non-democratic societies and ultimately caused led to their downfall.
Yes siree Bob. In short, to us, the United State's of America's, democratic political stability was as guaranteed as the rising and the setting of the sun.
Well, unfortunately, the political history of the last ten years or so has drastically changed all that. You see, today, the stability that had once been taken for granted, has suddenly been replaced with a threatening uncertainty. In fact, at present, there is even serious talk about the possibility of states such as Florida and Georgia seceding from the union.
This unusual un-American idea has gained strength since that article was published and was preceded by a political turmoil in which disrespect towards government institutions once considered sacrosanct.
So because of this, the nation's future now seems uncertain, and the once stable and great USA, has suddenly lost that unique aura of unassailable permanence and unwavering dedication to democracy for which it was once globally renown.
