Benefits of Learning to Read Music
Learning to play songs by ear is effective, and because of it some might some might object to the suggestion that they should learn to read music by saying that they are doing OK without it. That might be true. However, knowing how to read music makes many pieces available to the guitarist that would otherwise be beyond his reach since not all songs are amenable to being learned by ear. Many classical and jazz pieces defy learning via imitation due to the intricacies of the chords and hand positioning required. Also, the complex interaction of lead and base when playing solo classical guitar might prove illusive. Such puzzling problems are clarified when they are read and difficult passages finally understood. So that benefit alone makes it an essential tool that every guitarist should have at his disposal. Yeah, I know, learning to read and write music can be a very tedious thing to try to learn. Harder than learning to read a foreign language actually. But like all difficult things in life, there will be progress and the obstacles will give way if we persist. So dedicating some time to it each day will definitely pay off in the long run. Here is a link to an article that provides additional reasons why a guitarist should learn to read and write music.
