Impacts of Shunning
One very important thing to keep in mind, is that JWs do not NEED to have any official reason to go into the shunning mode. They will go into that mode automatically if they personally deem you to be weak in the faith because you do not attending meetings to the degree they expect. Or even if they fear that you are taking an interesting their daughter or son, and they don't like your ethnicity. Or if you offend one of their friends. Then, suddenly, the shunning begins. One moment the person seems very friendly, and the next the person looks like an enemy.
Now, the video below describes a congregational shunning based on a decision reached by the congregation elders that you should be shunned. This decision could be based on unrepentant sinning, or it could be based on a disagreement with the organization's doctrinal teachings. Either way, all the other members are not to speak to the person or even say a greeting. Usually, family members such as parents and siblings, and other extended family members will go into the same shunning mode. Nearby congregations, and even distant ones, will be informed just in case you try to attend them and escape the shunning.
Your suffering? Well, lets just say that they feel that whatever suffering you are experiencing, you deserve it. To them, you are now suddenly worse than a person of the world because you rejected God and went over to the Devil even after learning what they consider to be the truth. For all practical reasons you are dead. If your kids have kids they will not inform you. If you become ill and get hospitalized, they will not go to see you at the hospital. If you die they will not make a funeral.
So getting shunned is indeed a very serious thing. The video below recounts a personal experience from a former elder.
