Why no Bears in Africa?
The following video proposes many reasons for the absence of bears in Africa. One is that one species, the Atlas bear, were hunted to extinction by humans. The other is that the bears that were once present could not tolerate the weather changes that occurred. Others propose that the competition by pack animals such as hyenas, lions and wild dogs, would place bears at an extreme disadvantage since bears are solitary animals. Also, that their fishing in rivers, as they do in other areas, would be far more difficult due to the presence of crocodiles and hippos.
Also, pack animals such as lions, target the offspring of other predators in order to reduce competition for prey. So the mother bear would need to be extra careful. So survival in the African savanna would definitely be far more challenging for bears than it is for them in such places as Siberia, and North America where the competition for available food resources is far less challenging.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
