The Tao of the Shark Bitten Surfboarders
Surfboarding, or riding of ocean waves towards the shore while standing on a surfboard, seems to be a very addictive activity which leads its practitioners into a suicidal rationalization involving the serious risks. Why suicidal? Well, because surfing involves the invasion of the domain where sharks do their hunting, the ocean, and unfortunately, they often mistake humans for their usual prey-seals.
Ironically, surfboarders are very aware of the very serious danger that might be lurking silently below. After all, they have repeatedly heard the horror stories, read about the heartrending disasters, and watched graphic documentaries that graphically display the horrendous damage that sharks can inflict with their rows of serrated teeth. Yet, they still decide to risk the danger of losing a limb, getting horribly deformed, or suffering death itself just for the thrill of riding those magnificent waves towards shore.
In fact, some surfers who have lost limbs promptly return to surfing immediately after they heal. In short, they consider the risk of losing their remaining leg or arm perfectly justifiable. After all, they reason, if they should die from a shark bite, then at least they perished while doing something they fervently loved and that is supposed to be a very good thing.
Makes one wonder what exactly it is about surfing those waves that can so strongly motivate that kind of euphorious carelessness doesn't it?
