Why did Jesus have to Die on a Stake?
There were many other forms of execution that Jesus might have died under such as stoning, beheading, or hanging or strangulation. In fact, on one occasion some people attempted to stone him after he preached in their synagogue.
So why not let him die in that way? Well, it all has to do with a curse placed on the nation of Israel for its inability to follow the Mosaic Law. You see, such inability brought the nation under a curse as the apostle Paul explains in his letter to the Hebrews.
Galatians 3:10
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
In Israel persons placed for public viewing on a tree or a stake wee considered to be cursed. Why?
Simple, because the person left to hang on a tree or a stake immediately after death was being denied burial in a memorial tomb from which a resurrection was expected. So in that sense, he was considered as cursed or undeserving of a Resurrection.
So in order for Christ to die for mankind's sins in general, it was NOT necessary for him to be hung on a stake. However in order to remove that curse from the Jews, he needed to die in that specific manage. He took on the accursed condition of the Jews in dying in that way and paid specifically on their behalf. The Apostle Paul explains that in his letter to the Hebrews telling them that Christ became a curse for us-referring to the Hebrews, Jews or Israelites.
John 8:59 ►
At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
