Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
The Bible tells us that Arrogance precedes a fall. The question is why? What exactly is it about being arrogant that tends to produce this result? Well, when we look at the many examples that life provides, we always find one common denominator shared by the arrogant. That common denominator is none other than overconfidence.
You see, overconfidence, or being far more confident than they should be, makes the arrogant vulnerable. How does it make arrogant vulnerable? It makes them vulnerable because they underestimate the dangers they might be facing and fail to prepare properly for the challenge and put forth a token effort. You know, because they feel that it is unnecessary or below their dignity.
It happens in all areas of life politics, sports, academics. One moment the person seems to be on top of the world, and suddenly he is defeated. In boxing, for example, it might mean that the arrogant individual chooses not to train properly and entering the ring overweight.
In politics it might mean putting up a token or halfhearted effort against opposition dismissed as inconsequential.
In marriage it might be feeling that the spouse can't find someone else and so treating her or him like garbage is deemed OK. Suddenly the spouse is gone and the arrogant person is left alone to ponder his folly.
In short, arrogance is a vice, and must be avoided as a vice if we are to avoid the humiliating consequences that it tends to inflict on those who embrace it.

Once again for emphasis:
Proverbs 18:12
Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 29:23
A man's pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor.
