Yes Martha! Andromeda will definitely collide with us!
We always knew that the galaxy called Andromeda was traveling towards us and the approximate date of its arrival in out vicinity. However, it wasn't quite clear whether Andromeda will pass us by closely or collide. Well, now it is a certainty. Yes Martha, it will collide with us in approx four billion years.
Predicted result? The gravitational interaction is predicted to cause the twain galaxies to merge and produce a larger elliptical one. Some stars will shifted into the monstrous black hole created when black holes of both galaxies merge. Other stars might be flung into the solitary existence of intergalactic space. Still others will simply go into different orbits. Most stars will miss each other due to the unimaginable distances between them, but some might collide. Below is a brief description of how the sky would look from Earth if Earth remains part of this new galaxy.
