The Irony of the MAGA slogan
On the surface, the MAGA or Make America Great Again slogan seems commendable But on closer inspection, it doesn't fit that description. In fact, it is a good example of situational irony, the striving to reach a goal and accomplishing the opposite. In this case, it applies to the effort being made to make America Great Again. Why? Simple, because the things that are being weakened in the process are the very things that made America great to begin with.
Things that Made America Great
America was always perceived as a government which would never steep to dictatorial demands of some misguided demagogue such as Mussolini, Stalin or a Hitler. It was deemed the beacon of freedom where a person could live under the assurance that such regimes nor leaders would ever be in charge. It was deemed a land of opportunity where the religiously persecuted and the politically oppressed could gain asylum as prominently declared at the base of its Statue of Liberty. If injustices had happened in American history, it was firmly believed that we had reached a stage where they would never be allowed to happen again.
This is what really made America Great, and not its industrial or military might since those two have been common in human history.
Ironically, the MAGA slogan condemns these former virtues and encourages the imitation of dictatorial regimes instead. With a president who seems proud to imitate dictators and mimic their pogroms against minorities, the future of America looks dismal indeed and its true greatness threatens to become a forgotten myth.
