(The Guardian) How are hurricanes or tropical storms rated?--Hurricanes are rated according to their sustained wind speed. From 1-5, this scale estimates potential property damage. According to the US National Hurricane Centre, storms reaching category 3 and higher are considered major, because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Hurricane ratings and likely damage: -Category 1: Very dangerous winds will produce some damage. Sustained winds of 119-153 km/h (74-95 mph) -Category 2: Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage. Sustained winds of154-177 km/h (96-110 mph) -Category 3: Devastating damage will occur. Sustained winds of 178-208 km/h, 111-129 mph -Category 4: Catastrophic damage will occur. 209-251 km/h (130-156 mph) -Category 5: Catastrophic damage will occur. 252 km/h or higher (157 mph or higher)
