Using EBT At Indian Stores: A Cultural Viewpoint
The following need not always be the case, but if the Hinduism, religious views are the ones being adhered to, then they will be and it's only fair that the buyer beware.
First, let's define what an EBT card is.
First, let's define what an EBT card is.
What is Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT)?
Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participant to pay for food using SNAP benefits.
When a participant shops at a SNAP authorized retail store, their SNAP EBT account is debited to reimburse the store for food that was purchased. EBT is in use in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. EBT has been the sole method of SNAP issuance in all states since June of 2004.
In other words, in the United States, the EBT card is provided to help persons of lower income with covering the cost of groceries. It is a gesture of compassion that should be commended. Unfortunately, it comes with a stigma which can vary in intensity depending on the merchant's cultural background.
For example, merchants from India will tend to view an EBT user's humbled situation as Karma, or the deserved consequence of previous lives
In Indian religions, the term more specifically refers to a principle of cause and effect, often descriptively called the principle of karma, wherein intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect): Good intent and good deeds contribute to good karma and happier rebirths, while bad intent and bad deeds contribute to bad karma and bad rebirths. As per some scripture, there is no link of rebirths with karma.
The concept of karma is closely associated with the idea of rebirth in many schools of Indian religions (particularly in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism), as well as Taoism. In these schools, karma in the present affects one's future in the current life, as well as the nature and quality of future lives—one's saṃsāra.

In other words. a person deserves to be reaping the humiliation that he has sown because of having been perhaps thieves. rapists, murderers, or rapists in previous lives in who are now reaping what they sowed as evidenced by their dependence on an EBT card.
