Puerrto Ricans: Are You really Home?
Unlike other Latinos who immigrate to the United states from such places such as South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, such as Cuba and the Dominican Republic, as American citizens since birth, many Puerto Ricans feel that when they move to the States that they are never really leaving what they felt was home. Instead, they feel as if they are merely shifting from one room in a house to another.
But is that really the case? Well, perhaps from their view it is since they assume that all other Americans are considering them to be 100% as American as they are. But unfortunately the reality is that they are not. You see, from the Anglo American and the African American perspectives, Puerto Ricans are as much foreigners or immigrants as are Mexicans and all other Latinos who immigrate from other countries. Puerto Rico itself? Well, Puerto Rico is considered just another Latin American country despite its official status as a USA territory.
Now, how can this misperception of reality be problematic? Simple. When such delusional Puerto Ricans assume that they are accepted as 100% USA citizens and will be treated as 100% USA citizens, but are suddenly confronted with extremely severe Anglo or African American hostility, they immediately go into denial.
No, it can't be! After all, they are not considered foreigners. So it certainly must be that discriminators involved are a very rare exception. Ore else: Oh this must surly be some rare local phenomenon restricted to a neighborhood or a state? Yep! That must be it.
Yes, such reasoning does constitute a coping mechanism which lets them go on without feeling that Afro and Anglo societies deeply dislike them often to the point of murderous hatred or hold them in deep contempt.
However the downside to such reasoning is that it encourages those who are persecuting to continue their discriminatory policies since there are absolutely no repercussions involved. In short, such a seemingly docile and totally accepting mentality reinforces the discrimination. Refused housing? Oh that must be a personality quirk. Savagely jumped in a bus by irate Afro Americans? Oh those must have been a group of ignorant adolescents. Repeatedly denied employment by Anglo Americans? Oh that must be something that goes on in that city. Meanwhile, the perpetrators are having a ball and getting off Scott Free and you are setting others up for the same and its an endless chain via perpetrated your idiotic delusions.
No, the naked truth is that the animosity that we we encountered from the Italians and from the Irish in Newark New Jersey was not restricted to that city. Instead it is characteristic of all of them regardless of the city that you might live in. No, the contempt for our culture that was expressed by Bernard Hopkins's stepping on our flag in Puerto Rico is not restricted to him alone, instead, that's the way most of them feel and what most of them fervently wish they could do had they the same opportunity to get away with it. No, the refusal or strong reluctance to pay a fair wage to Puerto Ricans isn't restricted to some individual factory-owner with a personality quirk, it is the way most feel that Puerto Ricans should be treated.
If indeed you as a Puerto Rican don't realize this early on, and perceive it s it is intended to be perceived, as an insult, then you will be seen as a fair target because of your docile acceptance and will be considered viable prey by a culture that is inherently predatory against all Latinos-and Puerto Ricans are no exception despite being born citizens of the USA.-not by a long-shot.
