Why the Confusion Between Race and Nationality?
Strange as it might seem to the rest of the world, which has absolutely no trouble telling the difference, in the United States, the difference between nationality and race causes a profound confusion among a significant percentage of its population. Mostly among Anglo and African Americans.
You see, to such individuals, race and nationality seems to be equivalent terms. In short, if you are English, French, German, Scandinavian, Norwegian, or if you are Chinese, Vietnamese, of if you are Mexican Honduran Cuban, et4ceteara, then you automatically are deemed white, Mixed, or Racially Mongol or of the so called yellow race. In short, you cannot be a white Chinese, a white Mexican, not a White Angolan nor Egyptian. Why? Because to these individuals all Egyptians are either mixed or black, all Mexicans are Mestizos, all Chinese people are Oriental or yellow.
The problem with this mentality is very simple. You see, when you are born in a country, your birth certificate has you registered as a member of that nationality, regardless of your race. So if you are black and are born in Germany, you are a German of the black race. If asked what nationality you belong to, you are obligated to say German. If asked what race-you must say black. The same holds true for all nationalities. If you are white and are born in Mexico, your nationality is Mexican but your race is white. Even if you are an immigrant and have become a citizen, the same rule applies.
Simple isn't it? Yet a significant number of USA citizens are baffled by this simple concept. Now, the strange thing about their supposed confusion, is that they have absolutely no problem differentiating between race and nationality when it involves their own country, the USA.
In their case, they understand perfectly well what the difference between race and nationality is. You see, they know very well that being an American, or USA citizen, says absolutely NOTHING about your racial identity, since very obviously, unless you are legally blind, there are Americans of all races.
Since this is indeed the case, what are we to think about their supposed confusion with telling the difference between nationality and race when it is referring to a nationality that is not American? Are we to assume that a sudden inability to think automatically sets in? How is such a sudden mental paralyses that so effectively mimics sheer stupidity work? Anyone have an explanation for this seemingly unsolvable conundrum.
