Is It conscious? It claims to be!
The problem of determining whether or not a machine can be conscious is that these machines have a very great ability in mimicking human thought processes. For example, AI can can play chess better that most humans, and yet it does not visually see chess pieces but only deal with mathematical problems which they solve and which are translated into moves in the chessboard. How do we know that it experiences a sense of regret when it apologizes?
After all, when we feel have such thoughts, they are accompanied by emotions or bodily sensations induced by hormones such as adrenalin which make us FEEL a bodily sensations. The same occurs with lines of reasoning or else pleasant or unpleasant memories which instigate anger, envy, outrage, pride, sorrow, loneliness, gladness etc. All these are accompanied by emotions. Yet, there is absolutely no corresponding mechanisms in these machines intended to mimic such sensations reaction in a computer or an AI.
In short, can they truly be assumed to be really regretful, friendly, sorrowful. annoyed, when the feelings are missing? And if indeed they attempt to express such emotions, what is AI's goal? Deception? Is it indeed aware that is is being deceitful? Or is it mindlessly just following a line of responses that it finds unavoidable. In short, is it conscious at all, or will it be forever merely a machine? That is the question that the viseo delves ibnto.
