The Vast Majority? So what?
Just recently on lichess, I was told by a pestiferous heckler who is tolerated and encouraged there, that the vast majority of biologists are atheist evolutionists and that this should lend credence to the abiogenesis and atheistic evolution ideas.
Well, please note that such and argument is called ad populace or appeal to popularity contributes nothing to the credence of any idea. Because of that it is called fallacious or defective reasoning,
As an example of just how fallacious it can be, please consider that the vast majority of scientists have very often been wrong about issues that they had considered indisputable truths.
For example, prior to the Big Bang idea, the majority had believed that the universe was in a steady state condition. The it had always existed and was always replenishing itself via he formation of new stars. Of course, this went completely contrary to what the bible tells us. So when the Big bang was sudden lt emerged and proven to be a fact, the vast majority were proven wrong and had to deal with the realization that the facts confirmed what the Bible had been saying all along that the universe had a beginning.
Reaction:
There was an increasing sense of sudden panic among atheist scientists, since they feared that such a concept would lead people to propose a creator. In any case, the majority had been wrong. So as this case illustrates, appeal to he majority is simply unacceptable as a viable argument.
