Surprised and Disappointed
Most of us have been both surprised and disappointed due to the recent events that have placed mankind at the brink of a horrifying globally devastating WWIII. You see, we had honestly believed that a human willingness to engage in such a war was highly improbable and virtually unthinkable based on its horrific impact on Earth's environment and life.
Unfortunately, it appears that we have once more been optimistically wrong. Recent events involving Russia and the Ukraine have clearly demonstrated that technological advancements have obviously had no effect on mankind's aggressive murderous predispositions. After all, here we are approx. 100 years in the future since WWI and 76 years after the end of WWII, threatening to do it all over again, and having our optimism unceremoniously shattered by the human predisposition and seemingly limitless capacity for savagery.
Two Disappointments
1. As a species, we had honestly thought ourselves now incapable of killing civilians as had been done during WWII in such cities as Tokyo and Nagasaki and Dresden, and we had been sure that classifying such indiscriminate slaughter of civilians as a war crime, would prevent it. Yet here we have Russia's so-called President, Putin, a person who obviously suffers from inability to feel compassion and takes pride in his tendencies towards cruelty, proving us all wrong.
2. We also had honestly believed that Hitler's military failure, and the cost in human lives it had entailed, had provided an example that would forever discourage imitation of his methods. Yet, the willingness of Russia's armies to do exactly what such a kind of unbalanced person is once again demanding proved us wrong.
