Defer
The human brain is programmed to erase or weaken the memory of things that we never use. That happens in relation to anything, such as music, mathematics, poetry. So if we indeed to retain a skill or information, then repetition and usage or practice is essential.
The word defer is a case in point in my case. I do remember having learned it in my adolescence but since I never employed this word in my writing or conversation, I completely forgot its meaning.
