The New Anita?
Just recently, I watched a video where the new West Side Story's Anita says that she had never felt a part of a Latino community before this film. She stated that the Latino community has always perceived her as not Latina enough.
Please note that such a Latino reaction is usually reserved towards those who show a preference to identify with either Anglo American or African American culture rather than with their Puerto Rican culture. However, despite this very obvious discrepancy, Spielberg chose her and she accepted, of course, since there is a lot of money involved.
I cannot help but to find it exceedingly strange that Spielberg should choose someone who never truly identified with Puerto Ricans to play the part of a Puerto Rican, when there were many other women of full Puerto Rican heritage who qualified available. Seems as if Spielberg just wanted to reinforce the message conveyed by the original which represented the original Anita with dark brown skin.
Gee! I wonder how he would feel if a Puerto Rican movie producer chose to make a film about Jews and chose to represent them all with exceedingly long noses and chose an actress who is half African America and only faintly Jewish to play the part. while rejecting all the fully Jewish women who applied for the role. I cannot imagine him calmly accepting such a scenario.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
