The Universe could be shaped like a 3d Doughnut?
First, please note that by infinity I do not mean a continually expanding object that has a specific shape and maintains that shape while expanding. What I mean is the extension of the object infinitely in all directions and encompassing all of reality. In the following video, the universe is hypothetical proposed to perhaps be three- dimensional donut shape? That idea creates problems related to finiteness and infiniteness. Such a problem can be viewed from either a purely non religious or a religious perspective.
The universe is shaped? Did they just say that? Well, when something is assumed to have a specific shape, then it is being assumed to be finite. Why? Very simple, because in order to have a shape, things need boundaries that delineate that shape. and boundaries limit their extension by default. For example, a sphere is a sphere because of its boundaries. The same applies to cubes, squares and triangles. They exist as they are due to the required dimensions which provide them with the characteristics peculiar to each one. In short, it cannot be infinite in all directions and yet retain a that specific donut shape.
Which brings us to the question of where exactly this proposed hypothetical, donut-shaped universe is supposed to be located. After all, limited things require a location in which to exists. On the other hand, since the truly infinite, cannot have any specific shape to delineate its existence, then how can it exist?
This is really an unanswerable conundrum both from the scientific and from the religious perspective.
Atheists describe our universe as the result of this the Big Bang described as having suddenly started our universe from nowhere and for some totally unknown reason. Others propose that it is simply one of an infinite number of Big Bangs within a location that there tag as hyperspace. However, this does not solve the location problem since the question of our universe is applicable to hyperspace as well. In short, their attempts to explain existence inevitably deteriorate into an infinite regress with no end in sight. If indeed there is no end in sight, then existence would be an impossibility since nothing produces nothing.
In contrast, religion from the Cristian perspective, a creator, specifically the one described in the Bible in the book of Genesis. Now, if indeed God created the universe, then by default, he needed to exist exterior to it. Why? because all that exists apart from himself, is the product of his creative efforts. In fact, when nothing had been created, then all there was was God.
But then the inevitable question arises, where was God himself located before he began to create? Then of course we come back to the quandary of how anything can exist without having a location? Well, since nothing else existed, then we must assume that God needed no location in order to exist. In short, when the Bible tells us that God decided to create, then God was everything. An unspecified amount of time as measured by humans went by and he he began creating locations apart or exterior from himself. One of these places he named heaven and decided to locate himself to dwell within it,.
Later, the time is left unspecified, after having created other entities, of a similar but less powerful kind, he decided to create our Material Universe, an event that we have come to call the Big Bang. Which brings us back to the same quandary but with two choices.
God created our universe as a separate location surrounded by his heaven location or else outside of it.
We simply don't know.
