The Laniakea Supercluster
It has been found that the galaxies in our universe are organized into clusters and these clusters into super clusters strung out in filaments surrounding great voids where virtually no galaxies exist. Our galaxy is no exception.
It is located at the outer edge of what is called the Laniakea, Hawaiian for Vast Heavens, super cluster, and is adjacent to one of the great voids. Former concentrations of galaxies that had previously been considered independent superclusters such as the Virgo Supercluster, are now understood as being part of our home super cluster. Galaxies in Laniakea are being pulled towards a region where great material density is assumed to exist. It is referred to as the Great Attractor.
