Trapping ourselves on Earth?
Ever see that cartoon where a person gradually and very calmly paints himself into a corner only to suddenly realized that he is trapped? The comical thing about it, is that common sense would be expected to prevent such a scenario. After all, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that-does it? Yet, in the realm of space exploration, it seems that common sense might not prevail, and we will find ourselves in a similar or identical situation.
How? Well, easy. You see, by mindlessly putting so many satellites into orbit, reaching outer space becomes either extremely unnecessarily hazardous, to almost impossible due to the accidental collision risks. Seems far fetched-doesn't it? Well, not if you are familiar with the plans to launch thousands of satellites into orbit in order to make the Internet far more efficient.
The satellites also block an astronomer's view and limits what can be detected in all those different directions. That will severely slow our understanding of the cosmos. But there is also a far greater inconvenience. The inconvenience of not being able to detect an incoming, near-earth asteroid, or some distant comet coming our way in time to deflect it properly or not at all.
