One Man's Hero Film
Most people imagine Irish Americans as people who were readily accepted into mainstream white society. However, nothing could be farther from the truth. Irish Americans did experience constant discrimination based on cultural differences and one of these was religion. You see, German and Anglo American people are both of the Protestant faith while the Irish immigrants were Roman Catholics.
This constant cultural animosity spilled over into the armed forces and led subsequently to an entire batallion of Irish Americans siding with Mexico during the Mexican American War. This film very effectively conveys the drama and tensions that those Irish Americans experienced during that turbulant time as well as its tragic ending in Mexico City. The Batallion of Irish Americans was called the Saint Patricio's Battalion after their patron saint, St Patrick.
