There is no "I" or ASS sound in the name Diaz.
Actually, the "ass" sound as in in the word "jackass" doesn't exist in the Spanish language because the Spanish "รค" is never pronounced that way. I point this out because, unfortunately, there a is certain disconcerting tendency among certain Afro and Anglo Americans, to add a very strong "ass" as in "jackass" sound to the name Diaz. Please note that such a sound is not part of the Diaz surname, just as it is not part of the Barnabas, Thomas, Elias, Douglass, Cephas, Lukas, names.
If indeed Anglos and Afros have absolutely no trouble in refraining from adding an indecent "ass" sound to these other names, then it should not be any challenge at all to refrain from doing so with name Diaz.
Unfortunately, when calmly informed about the serious and indecent mispronunciation, some respond with the provocatively disrespectful,
"Whatever!"
Just recently, this African American female clerk at a healthcare center responded by accusing the Latino involved of being picky. Another African American responded by insisting that his Latina girlfriend pronounced Diaz in that indecent way all the time, and even looked ready to throw hands over it. This Anglo American famous sport's announcer always has a field day with that indecent pronunciation of the name Diaz, even though everyone else who was with him were pronouncing it correctly.
Strange! After all, if any Latino would dare to add that indecent "ASS" sound to the surnames Douglas, or Thomas by pronouncing them as Dougle Ass and Thom-Ass, then they would be all over the place demanding that the rude Latino pronounce it correctly. If the rude Latino would dare respond with a belligerent "Whatever!", then a serious argument or perhaps a fight is very likely to ensue.
So why not do unto others as you would have others do unto you, and stop purposefully mangling other people's surnames? If in doubt, then please ask.
BTW:
Neither is there any "eye" sound to the letter "I" in Spanish. All Spanish vowels are pronounced short. So the name Diaz is definitely not pronounced as "Die Ass".
