There is "I" or ASS sound in the name Diaz.
Actually, the "ass" sound as in in the word "jackass" doesn't exist in the Spanish language because the Spanish"ä" is never pronounced that way. I point this out because, unfortunately, there a is certain disconcerting tendency among certain Afro and Anglo Americans to add a very strong "ass" as in "jackass" sound to the name Diaz. Please note that such a sound is not part of the Diaz surname just as it is not part of the Thomas and Douglass surnames.
If indeed Anglos and Afros have absolutely no trouble in not adding an "ass" sound to these two names, then it should not be any challenge at all to refrain from doing so with name Diaz. Unfortunately, when informed about the serious and indecent mispronunciation, some respond with the provocatively disrespectful, "Whatever!"
Actually, African American female responded with by accusing the Latino involved as being picky. Another African American responded by insisting that his girlfriend pronounced in that way all the time and looked ready to throw hands. This Anglo American famous sport's announcer had a field day with that indecent pronunciation despite the fact that everyone else who was with him were4 pronouncing it correctly.
Strange! since if any Latino would dare to add that indecent "ass" sound to the surnames Douglas a Thomas by pronouncing them as Doug-glass and Thom-ass, then they would be all over the place demanding that the rude Latino pronounce it the right way. If the rude Latino would dare respond with a belligerent "Whatever!", then a serious argument is very likely to ensue.
So why not do unto others as you would have others do unto you and not purposefully mangle other people's surnames? If in doubt, please ask.
BTW Neither is their any "ëye"sound to the letter "Ï" in Spanish. All vowels are short. So the name is definitely not pronounced as "Die Ass" .
