Difference Between Nationality and Race
There seems to be great confusion in reference to these two terms in the USA. So in the hopes of reducing the confusion, let's consider what the differences between them are. First, let's consider nationality. Nationality involves being a citizen of a nation. You can be of any race and be of any nationality. For example, there are black German, Spaniards, French. Many were born in these countries and speak the language. Others have moved to these countries and have been granted citizenship. In short, you can be Asian, Black, Native American, and be a Spaniard, Englishman, or a German.
But race is different. The race has to do with how genetics has determined physical ppearance. If you appear East Asian, then that wiil likely be your race. If you look North European, then that will be considered your race. If you look Black, then that will be considered to be your race. This does not change but follows you no matter what nationality you might be born into or be granted during your lifetime. Even if you move to Mars, you will be a white Martian, Black Martian, or East Asian Martian.
For these reasons, it woud be nonsensical to ask what Race are Martians as it is nonsensical to ask what race are Canadians, Mexicans, Russians since such countries include people of diverse races. Of course, we can say that people there are predominantly white, or predominantly black or predominantly East Asian. But to expect 100% of people living there to fall under one exclusive category and to refuse to believe that there are those who do not, indicates an inexcusble ignorance..
Unfortunately, such ignorance is particularly prominent in reference to Latin American nations. For example, categorizing every Latino in these countries as Brown is just plain ignorant. Why? Well, because there are obviously 42 million black Latinos who take pride in being black and are definitely not BROWN. Neither is every single person in Mexico Mestizo. There are people of European descent in these countries who also don't fit under that Brown category. True, they are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Argentinians. That is their nationality. But races within those nationalities exist and ignorng them is inexcusable.
