Understanding Compulsive Liars
Everyone has lied sometime during their lives. I guess it is inevitable. However, when such lying becomes a habitual primary characteristic of a person's personality-it can be considered pathological. At that extreme point nothing that the person says can be trusted since the dishonesty reputation justifies doubting the veracity of anything said regardless of how vehemently or seriously it might be uttered. In fact, the seriousness with which such lies are pronounced has become well-practiced part of the deceit.
But why do humans do it? Well, to achieve goals which they would otherwise not be able to achieve.
For example, plagiarizing a written composition and presenting it as theirs in order to pass a writing college class exam in English composition. I witnessed that one personally. No scruples whatsoever in benefiting from someone else's skills and effort!
Or claiming to be wealthier than one really is in order to impress a lady from a foreign country who is vulnerable to such lies because of naively believing that most Americans are wealthy and that poverty cannot exist in the USA. Of course this deceit inevitably leads to disappointments as the person gradually begins to notice the truth. But once the marriage ceremony is over and consummated, what is she supposed to do? Admit she was a gullible fool and g home in shame?.
Or pathological liars might go around claiming to be a well-trained black-belts in the martial arts to reduce the possibility of getting attacked physically.
Notice that in all these circumstances, there is some perceived intellectual or physical or economical deficiency which prevents the person from either accomplishing or else makes the person feel extremely unhappy or inadequate in comparison to others.
The sad thing about such a pathological habit, is that it tends to leave a trail of victims in its wake. People who had assumed honesty when deceit was was intended. People who might have paid with their health when driving an unsafe vehicle described as having been inspected and in top shape. The potential for harm is really endless
and because of it, it is a bad habit that should not be taken lightly. Especially so when the person who has it holds a high-ranking government position such as POTUS wherein constant misinformation can cost millions of lives.
