Yesterday 3/18/2020 I chose to visit to The Rite Aid Store at Strawberry Square Harrisburg at approx 2 pm in order to purchase a phone. Upon arrival and waiting in line, I had to stand right in front of the female black clerk as she completely ignored me for approx 1/2 minute while gazing affectionately at people of her own racial group behind me.
Finally, after providing that demonstration, she stared at me coldly and asked what I wanted. She then seemed extremely reluctant to go open the electronic section unless I guaranteed her that I was going to purchase the phone. Complained about inability to be at two places at once.
I decided to buy the phone and took it back to the counter where she resumed her antics and handed me the bagged merchandise in dead silence and looking away with a sarcastic smile. Told her that she was being rude and she feigned surprise. Of course her demonstration had been so blatant that her surprise was merely a way of calling me unnecessarily sensitive. Told her that she didn't seem to be doing it by mistake and left the store feeling as if I had been kicked in the teeth with a pair of hob-nailed boots.
I left the store, but before getting too far, I decided that I didn't want the merchandise if that is what I had to go through to get it. Back at the store she saw me at the back of the line, and instead of waiting until I got to her after serving customers in front of me, she decided to call out to me demanding a reason for my refund request. Seemed that she knew that the other customers were ready to converge on me because of some negative comment she must have made after I had left briefly. Bingo! After I repeated that she had been rude, that is exactly what they did.
As if driven by some instinctual hatred, some customers hurled nasty personal insults while others demanded that I shut up. Another, this a 300 pound six foot-three younger Anglo American man, began frothing at the mouth like some wild beast, hurled insults and gave me the index finger sign
A women in line in front of me called me trash unworthy of the behemoth's attention. I responded in kind. Then suddenly this young Latina-Looking lady, who obviously sucks up to Anglos and Afros, or else considers herself one, demanded I shut up and seemed on the verge o physically attacking me.
After the security guard arrived, the 300-pound guy walked up to me and called me an old man. Then stood in anxious expectation waiting for what he hoped was a violent reaction. Not getting the reaction he desired, he then threatened to get me outside. Claimed I only stood up to him because I was in the store. He said it right in front of the store security guard who, continued to focus only on me.
Meanwhile the other customers kept insulting me and he said nothing to them either. He just stood closely behind me as if ready to administer a choke hold or maybe zap me with a tazer. Only when I went outside and the 300 pound guy was on the verge of attacking, did he emerge from the store and threaten us BOTH with the police. Then he fearfully went scurrying back inside.
Explanation:
1. Please note that not once did I curse at the clerk or threaten her. I merely told her that she was being rude and walked out. Then, because I had seen no remorse, I returned and requested a refund. Both are perfectly legal and do not constitute a breach of customer etiquette.
2. It was then that customers converged on me like a pack of wolves smelling blood and were in breach of proper store customer behavior. As customers of Rite Aid, they needed to tend to their business of purchasing and leaving. and had absolutely no right to begin hurling insults or threatening physical attacks.
3. The employee, the checkout counter clerk, had no right to treat customers in unequal ways in order to get her personal negative opinions across. If indeed she harbors any, then she should do so on her own time and not during the time during which she is getting paid to do her job in a fair manner. Neither did she have the right to foment a negative attitude towards me by playing the victim when she knows that she instigated the whole thing via her racist behavior. If all I requested was a refund, then give the refund and be done with it.
4. The security guard had no right to focus all his attention on me by immediately judging me as the guilty one and telling me to leave while trying to stop me from responding to insults from other customers.
In the guard's presence, this 300 pound behemoth admitted that he was hoping that his insults would get me to attack him so he could savage me. I am more than certain than had he savaged me, the seemingly- innocent wench who provoked the whole thing would have been pleased beyond words. Needles to say, I am not going back to that store in that location.
BTW I am 73 years old and do not have a criminal record. Neither have I ever had this shamefully nasty thing happen to me at any other store. I have consistently gone to purchase items and any thing needed to be resolved was resolved peacefully. In contrast, the people at your store that day were imbued with a satanical hatred motivated by a MAGA
Trumpian Mentality, and the clerk with a fanatical Black-race superiority mentality that she needs to convey to people of my ethnic persuasion in order to feel good with and about herself were hell bent on causing a disturbance.
One thing I have noticed over the years of visiting this particular store on Market street, seems to employ these types of trouble-making individuals. I have never witnessed that kind of steady consistency anywhere else So their hiring criteria needs to be revamped.
